The Dutch Royal Family has visited the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz in Poland.
King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, Princess Amalia, Princess Alexia, and Princess Ariane privately visited the extermination camp on 4 July.
The family received a guided tour, and the King was seen wearing a kippah during the visit to the concentration camp, where over a million Jews were killed during the Holocaust.
The news of the visit was initially reported by Dutch journalist Rick Evers. The Government Information Service (RVD) later confirmed the visit.
They told Evers, “The family did indeed visit Auschwitz. After the official visit to the memorial, they decided to visit quietly and privately as a family. They carried out that intention.”
Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviet Union on 27 January 1945. Heads of state and royals from across the world gathered at the camp to mark the 80th anniversary of its liberation in January of this year. King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and Princess Amalia were some of the royals in attendance, alongside Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark, King Charles and several others.
