Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway has sat down for an interview with NRK regarding her relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Due to her declining health, the interview was limited to 20 minutes, and Crown Prince Haakon also attended the interview. Recent releases of the Epstein files show that the Crown Princess had extensive contact with him between 2011 and 2014.
The Crown Princess explains how she met Jeffrey Epstein and how she did not know about his conviction. She said, “It is my responsibility that I did not investigate well enough.” The emails revealed that she googled him in 2011 and wrote back to him that “It didn’t look good :)” She said she doesn’t remember what she found exactly, but claims she didn’t “realise that he was an abuser and sex offender, I wouldn’t have written a smiley face behind it.”
The Crown Princess and Jeffrey Epstein had a friendly relationship, and the banter in the emails was obvious. She claims that she never saw anything illegal.
In early 2013, Crown Princess Mette-Marit stayed at Epstein’s Palm Beach house for several days. When he arrived there on the last day of her stay, something happened that she refuses to speak about further. She says, “But Epstein behaved towards me in a way that I didn’t like. I can’t hide that.” Contact remained for a while after this, which the Crown Princess explains, “I think it was probably because he was so manipulative that he used the fact that we had a mutual friend. That I am gullible. I like to believe the best about people. But I also chose to end contact with him, and it was because of episodes like that.”
In another email, Crown Princess Mette-Marit wrote to Epstein about a “Boring wedding” in October 2012. This likely refers to the wedding of the then Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg and Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy. Crown Princess Mette-Marit comments, “I don’t really want to go into the content of the various emails, because that… That’s one of the things I find most challenging that has come out. Because I don’t want people I respect and love to be hurt in any way. But of course I have raised it with them afterwards.”
Crown Princess Mette-Marit tells NKR that she regrets not warning more people about Epstein. “Yes, it is. I regret and have thought a lot about the fact that I should have told more people that he was a bad person. Of course, I did it with my closest friends, but I have felt a lot about not warning more people. I still didn’t know anything about all the abuse. But I had understood enough to think he was a bad guy whom people shouldn’t have contact with. And I had seen up close how he blackmailed others. So I regret not telling more people, because I should have.”
The Crown Princess says, “It is incredibly important for me to take responsibility for not checking his background more carefully. And to take responsibility for being so manipulated and deceived as I was, says the Crown Princess. But it is important for me to clarify that there is no sin on me in this situation. It is all the victims who have been subjected to the gross abuses who deserve justice. And I feel such great anger that they haven’t received it. At the same time, it’s important for me to say that if I’ve done something that has contributed to giving him legitimacy in some way, it’s terribly difficult for me, of course.”
The interview does not answer all the questions being asked, and although it is good that the Crown Princess seems to be taking responsibility, one cannot help but wonder whether it is too little, too late.
