Crown Prince Haakon of Norway has spoken out after his stepson was arrested in Oslo.
Marius Borg Høiby, 27, was arrested in the Norwegian capital on 4 August. He has been accused of domestic violence.
Høiby was said to have been put in solitary confinement and released on Monday, 5 August.
The Crown Prince is currently in Paris to cheer on the Norwegian athletes at the Summer Olympic Games. His wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was due to join him, but after the arrest of her son, she has remained in Norway.
Crown Prince Haakon told the media: “It is a very serious situation when the police are involved, as is the case now. At the same time, I don’t think it is right for me to get involved in the case at this time. But it is clear that a case like this also affects me.”
He added about his wife’s absence: “In our family, as in all families, it is sometimes important to be there. In this case, I was the one who travelled, and Mette-Marit was the one who stayed home.”
Høiby’s attorney, Øyvind Bratlien, told TV2: “There is a lot of new information here that I cannot currently comment on. I have not received any new information from the police and it is very unfortunate how this case is developing in the media. We do not wish to contribute further to it now.”
The Royal Palace has not commented on the accusations against Høiby.
Marius Borg Høiby is Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son from a previous relationship. He is a member of the Royal Family but not the Royal House.
