Prince Joachim will be at the abdication events for his mother, Queen Margrethe, as she hands the throne over to his older brother, Crown Prince Frederik.

Joachim will travel to Copenhagen from his home in Washington D.C. alone. His wife, Princess Marie, and their two children, Count Henrik and Countess Athena, will remain in the United States.

Prince Joachim will only be in Denmark for a short time – for the abdication day events and the following day for the reception at the Danish parliament. He will return to America after the reception.

The Prince lives in the American capital as an employee at the Danish Embassy as a defence industry attaché with his family but returns to Denmark for the occasional royal duty and important events.

Queen Margrethe will abdicate the Danish throne on Sunday, 14 January, in favour of her elder son, Crown Prince Frederik, who will rule as King Frederik X.
