The Prince of Wales has surprised two rugby legends with CBEs.
Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield were awarded their CBEs at a meeting in Leeds at Headingley Stadium, where both men formerly played.
The pair were granted the honour in the New Year’s Honour List for their work with Motor Neuron Disease (MND), also called ALS in the United States.
Burrow was diagnosed with the deadly disease in 2019, and since then, the men have raised £15m for charities.
Prince William said to them on Thursday as he brought the CBEs: “I brought your CBEs up here to give to you today if that’s okay. While you’re in your home, in Leeds, surrounded by your family and friends – I thought today was a good day.”
To Burrow, the Prince said: “The most amount of thank yous and congratulations for all the inspirational work you’ve done Rob, you’ve been amazing and everyone’s so proud of you.”
When it came to Sinfield, William told him: “A huge, huge congratulations, it’s been amazing what you’ve done. The groundswell you’ve created in terms of fundraising and looking after each other and for MND is huge.
“Make sure you look after your knees, your hips, and everything else, but it’s been incredible.”
Sinfield has undertaken endurance challenges with the goal of raising £77,777, but he went above and beyond by raising £2.7m.
After the Prince of Wales left Leeds, Kensington Palace tweeted on his behalf: “A pleasure to award Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield with their CBEs at Headingley today. Thank you both for your incredible efforts in raising awareness and funds for Motor Neurone Disease. Both true heroes of the #MND community and the Rugby Football League.”
