Queen Camilla has called on the world to “never forget” the atrocities of the Holocaust.

In a speech to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Queen spoke about the inspiration Anne Frank is to many across the world and how no one should forget what took place during World War II.

“Let’s unite in our commitment to take action, to speak up and to ensure that the words ‘Never Forget’ are a guiding light that charts a path towards a better, brighter, and more tolerant future for us all,” she said.

Queen Camilla also quoted a passage from Anne Frank’s diary to stress the importance of not repeating the horrid mistakes of the past: “What is done cannot be undone, but at least one can prevent it from happening again.”

Her Majesty also met two Holocaust survivors with links to Anne Frank, whose famous diary of hiding from the Nazis has been read by millions. Anne Frank, one of six million Jews persecuted during the war, died at age 15 from disease in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945.

Queen Camilla attended a reception hosted by the Anne Frank Trust on 23 January, just a few days before the 80th anniversary commemorations of the liberation of Auschwitz. The Queen is the patron of the Anne Frank Trust.

The co-founder of the Anne Frank Trust is Honorary President Eva Schloss, who was liberated from Auschwitz by the
Soviet Army in 1945 alongside Anne Frank’s father, Otto.

The Anne Frank Trust was created by Otto Frank’s friends and family to fulfil his wish for an educational organisation to be set up in Anne’s memory.

Holocaust Memorial Day is held annually on 27 January.
