King Charles and Queen Camilla have attended the annual Maundy Service at Durham Cathedral.

King Charles presented the Maundy recipients with two purses: one red and one white, containing Maundy money. There were 76 men and 76 women, which represents the King’s age. The white purse contains a set of specially minted silver Maundy coins. The red purse contains a £5 coin commemorating The Queen Mother and a 50p coin which features stories of the Second World War.

The Maundy money is a gift in recognition of their outstanding Christian service and how they’ve made a difference in their local community.

The recipients are selected from Church of England dioceses across the country and Anglican and Ecumenical partners. This year, they have been chosen from the Dioceses of the Northern Province of England and Scotland.

After the service, King Charles and Queen Camilla met members of the public outside the Cathedral.
