Princess Elisabeth, the Duchess of Brabant, has been sworn in as an officer.

Elisabeth joined her classmates as they swore their oaths. She was the first to do so, and she took the oath in Belgium’s three official languages, Dutch, French and German. She said, “I swear allegiance to the King, obedience to the Constitution and the laws of the Belgian people!” She now holds the rank of Deputy Lieutenant of the Belgian Army.

Nearly all of Belgium’s monarchs were sworn in as officers. Her father took the oath in 1980, her grandfather in 1953 and her great-grandfather in 1923. Her great-uncle, King Baudouin, did not take his oath.
