Prime Minister Ishiba of Japan has released a statement on the passing of Princess Yuriko.
It reads, “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Her Imperial Highness Princess Yuriko of Mikasa.
“Since her marriage, Her Imperial Highness Princess Yuriko was a steadfast support to her late husband, His Imperial Highness Prince Mikasa, and as a member of the Imperial Household, she made extensive contributions across a wide range of fields, including healthcare, welfare, culture, sports, and international goodwill. In particular, she devoted herself over many years to maternal and child health initiatives, making remarkable efforts with great dedication.
“Princess Yuriko also attended numerous commemorative ceremonies and events, encouraging those involved and engaging warmly with the public.
“In her later years, Her Imperial Highness spent her days quietly and peacefully, and last year, she celebrated her 100th birthday. The people of Japan had been hoping for Her Imperial Highness’s continued longevity, and her passing has been felt with profound sorrow.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the members of the Imperial Household and other close relatives of Her Imperial Highness, and I join the people of Japan in mourning this great loss.”
Yuriko, Princess Mikasa died on 15 November 2024 at the age of 101.
