Crown Prince Fumihito and Prince Hisahito have visited earthquake-damaged areas.
The Crown Prince of Japan and his son began their visit in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, where they visited the Great East Japan Earthquake Memorial and Transmission Centre. The site is a former school building of Miyagi Prefectural Kesennuma Koyo High School, preserved as it was in 2011 after the tsunami damage. The two princes listened to stories from high school students and viewed cars and other items which were swept away.
The tsunami reached the fourth floor of the school, but everyone was safely evacuated to Hashikami Junior High School, which is about 2 kilometres away. The Crown Prince said, “I’m so glad that everyone managed to evacuate that far and is safe.”
Later in the day, the two princes visited a fish market at Kesennuma Port, which had been damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake. They watched the sorting process of bonito fish which had just come ashore.
The market was closed after the earthquake due to ground subsidence and was reopened in June 2011 after being raised. Later restoration work included installing new facilities.
Their last stop of the day was the Saiseikai Rikuzentakata Clinic in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture. This clinic opened after the earthquake to support local medical care.
