The Danish Royal Court has announced exciting news for the King and Queen of Denmark, with a very personal touch.

On Friday morning, 30th January, the Danish Royal Court announced a state visit for King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark. The Royal Couple will visit Australia from Saturday, 14th, to Thursday, 19th. This will be the King and Queen’s fourth official visit to Australia, and the first since King Frederik’s Accession.

The Royal Court added:

The Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities will accompany the Royal Couple during the visit, which will also include a large Danish business delegation.

The state visit will further develop the already strong relations between Australia and Denmark, both culturally, economically and in foreign policy. A strengthened partnership with Australia is particularly important at a time when geopolitical upheavals have economic and security consequences that tie developments in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region together. Building on the strategic partnership that was entered into between Australia and Denmark in 2023, the state visit will strengthen cooperation in a wide range of areas, including green transition and economic security.

This will be a personally significant trip for Queen Mary—the first Queen consort to be born in Australia. Mary Elizabeth Donaldson was born in 1972 in Tasmania, Australia. Before meeting and marrying the then-Crown Prince Frederik, Mary had an accomplished career in global advertising, marketing, and communications, including working for Microsoft and serving as an Account Manager at Mojo Partners. While The Queen has visited the Commonwealth in the past, both publicly and privately, this will be her first state visit as Mary Regina.

The business delegation accompanying the King and Queen will be comprised of 55 Danish companies, which will participate in an official business promotion titled ‘Partnering for a Green, Secure and Sustainable Tomorrow’. The aim is to promote cooperation within renewable energy and energy-efficient urban development. The “green transition” will be a particular focal point during the visit.

The Prime Minister of Australia said it’s an “honour” to welcome the King and Queen:

It is wonderful that the visit includes many parts of our great country, from the Northern Territory to Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, and of course Tasmania. Denmark and Australia are great friends, and together we are working to build a more sustainable, secure and peaceful future.

This visit is an opportunity to deepen our cooperation across a number of shared interests such as sustainability, renewable energy and innovation. Their Majesties The King and Queen of Denmark have a very special connection with Australia, and I know Australians will welcome them.

The PM’s Office noted that the six-day state visit will see King Frederik and Queen Mary visit various territories for a “number of business and cultural engagements.”
