King Harald V of Norway has honoured fallen sailors from the Second World War during a commemoration.

In April 2023, the wreck of the Japanese transport ship Montevideo Mary was found in the South China Sea. On board the ship were 24 captured Norwegian sailors who went down with the ship on 1 July 1942. Descendents and relatives of the sailors joined the King at the Oslo Seamen’s Association.

The sailors died alongside 1,000 Australians when the ship was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Sturgeon, which did not know that the ship carried prisoners of war.
