Crown Prince Haakon of Norway has begun his three-day official visit to Japan.

The Crown Prince started his day at Tokyo’s United Nations University to meet staff and students.

He later attended the opening of Arctic Frontiers Abroad; it is a meeting place for Arctic-focused researchers, business and decision-makers.

During the opening, Crown Prince Haakon stressed the importance of the Arctic and the oceans: “The Arctic, the global climate and the state of the ocean are closely interlinked. The ocean is our shared life-support system, and it is our shared responsibility. The ocean regulates our climate, feeds us, and supports our livelihoods.”

The first day concluded at the Norwegian design brand Norwegian Rain. Its flagship is in Tokyo and is one of the best markets in the world for fashion and design.

His Royal Highness is undertaking the trip to celebrate the two countries’ relationship, particularly in security policy, technology, trade, and the marine industry. He is joined by a Norwegian business delegation and Minister of Fisheries and the Oceans Marianne Sivertsen Næss, Minister of Digitalisation and Public Administration Karianne Tung.

Japan and Norway entered into a “strategic partnership” in 2023 to promote cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic.

The Crown Prince cancelled his final day in Japan due to his wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s, worsening health. His visit will now conclude on 3 June, instead of 4 June.
