King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands has attended a memorial service for Pope Francis.

The service took place in the co-cathedral basilica of St. Nicholas in Amsterdam. It had not been announced in advance that the King would attend the service.

The service was led by the Bishop of Haarlem-Amsterdam, Jan Hendriks, who said he was saddened by the death of Pope of France, “because we will miss him. But we are not only gloomy and sad. Pope Francis has gone to his destination: the Heavenly Father’s House. Our prayer for him is that he will be happy and at peace there.”

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will not be attending Pope Francis’s funeral on Saturday as it is King’s Day in the Netherlands. The country will be represented by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
