Princess Charlene gets Olympic role

Princess Charlene of Monaco has been given a new Olympic role, her first since competing for South Africa in 2000.

The Princess of Monaco has been appointed as Vice President of the Monegasque Olympic Committee (or Comité Olympique Monégasque in French).

In a statement released by the Prince’s Palace, the Princess said of her new role, “Sport taught me discipline, respect, and self-improvement.

“Today, I wish to place this experience at the service of athletes. I approach this role with a deep sense of commitment. Sport carries within it not only the pursuit of excellence, but also the responsibility to unite, inspire, and pass on values.”

Prince Albert serves as the organisation’s president.

The Monegasque Olympic Committee said that this will allow Charlene to continue “her long-standing commitment to sport, youth, and Olympic values.”

Charlene Wittstock, as she was then known, competed in swimming for South Africa in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She retired from swimming in 2017.

Her husband, Prince Albert II of Monaco, is also a former Olympic and member of the International Olympic Committee. He competed for Monaco in bobsledding in five Olympic Games from 1988 to 2002.
