Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg have made their first Joyeus Entry into Esch-sur-Alzette.

The visit is the first Joyeus Entry planned on the occasion of Grand Duke Guillaume’s accession. The couple arrived from Mersch by train and were received by Esch Mayor Christian Weis, Chamber of Deputies President Claude Wiseler and Finance Minister Gilles Roth.

The day began in Belval, and the Grand Ducal couple was greeted by waving crowds. Along the route, several activities and performances celebrated multiculturalism. The couple cycled from Belval to Place de la Résistance.

Grand Duke Guillaume cycled across Europe’s longest bicycle bridge, the Vëloduct, to the city centre, while the Grand Duchess visited the Halle des poches à fonte, where several institutions presented the region’s research and innovation work.

On the official website of the Luxembourg Monarchy, the Grand Ducal couple placed a message of thanks. “The Grand Ducal Couple wishes to express its warmest thanks to all those involved in organising this grand public festival, which paid tribute to the identity of the Minett region, represented by its 11 municipalities: Bettembourg, Differdange, Dudelange, Esch-sur-Alzette, Käerjeng, Kayl, Mondercange, Pétange, Rumelange, Sanem, and Schifflange.”
