Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg has taken part in the Journée nationale de la Commémoration to commemorate war victims.
Although flowers were laid all throughout the country, Grand Duke Henri took part in the ceremony in the capital city. He laid a wreath at the Monument National de la solidarité luxembourgoise and lit an eternal flame with an officer’s sword.
He was joined by President of the Chamber Fernand Etgen, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, Defense Minister François Bausch as well as the Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, Lydie Polfer, the Chief d’Etat-Major of the Armed Forces, Steve Thull, and the Director General of the Police, Philippe Schrantz.
The National Day of Remembrance is linked to the population census of 10 October 1941. At the time, the Nazis demanded to know whether people were Jewish, what their nationality was, what their native language was and what race they had. The resistance then called for these questions to be answered with “Luxembourgish.” Many people complied with this, and the census was cancelled.
