Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway’s health is worsening, according to her husband, Crown Prince Haakon.

According to Norwegian broadcaster NRK, the Crown Prince revealed that his wife’s health is deteriorating.

“The Crown Princess is seriously ill, and I think she has gotten a bit worse lately. So I am worried about her health. She uses oxygen in her everyday life, and that helps a bit.

And these six months have gone pretty well, I think. But there are different phases. So we just have to try to solve it as best we can,” he said.

Crown Prince Haakon made the comments while speaking to the press after the Abel Prize ceremony in Oslo.

His Royal Highness was also asked about his wife being put on the lung transplant list.

He responded, “It’s up to the doctors, it’s a medical question. So they’re the ones who decide when it should happen, when it’s right. But I think she’s gotten a lot worse lately, unfortunately.”

Crown Princess Mette-Marit, 52, was diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018 and began limiting her royal duties to focus on her health. In December 2025, the Royal Palace announced that her condition had progressed to the point where a lung transplant would likely be needed. By March 2026, her condition had continued to worsen, and she was being reviewed for a transplant.

The Crown Princess will continue to prioritise her health, and she is not expected to return to full-time royal duties.
