King Abdullah II of Jordan has attended the flag-raising ceremony at Al Husseiniya Palace on the occasion of Jordan’s National Flag Day.

Jordan’s National Flag Day always fall on 16 April and commemorates the first flag-raising in 1928 after the official adoption of the current flag.

King Abdullah was joined by several members of the Jordanian royal family, as well as representatives of various authorities, senior officials and officers. He was presented with the Jordanian flag by Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi. The King then handed the flag to an officer from the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army, who marched the flag towards the flagpole.

National Flag Day was begun after approval by the Council of Ministers as part of Jordan’s centennial celebrations, and its aim is to showcase Jordanian’s pride in their country. The flag in its current form was endorsed in 1922 and officially adopted in 1928. The shape and colours are inspired by the banner of the Great Arab Revolt, and it includes references to the banners of the Prophet Muhammad.
