Japan’s Prince Hisahito has begun university.

The Prince will begin studying at the University of Tsukuba, located just northeast of Tokyo, on 14 April in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Environmental Studies.

The future monarch attended the opening ceremony at the school on 5 April.

He will not reside on campus. Prince Hisahito will live at home for a time before renting an apartment near the university.

His parents, Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko said about their only son’s new journey: “We hope he has a fulfilling time at university.”

Hisahito’s choice of university is historic in the Japanese Imperial Family as he is the first member of the family born after World War II to study at a national university.
