King Abdullah II of Jordan has inaugurated the Baptism Site International Orthodox University (BIO Uni) at the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ (Bethany Beyond the Jordan).
He also expressed his support for the initiative to commemorate the 2,000-year anniversary of the baptism of Jesus Christ in 2030. This initiative was put forward by the Council of Church Leaders in Jordan. A plan for improving infrastructure and operational services will be needed.

The King met with Christian religious leaders from Jordan and Palestine at the site. He was joined by Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, His Majesty’s chief adviser for religious and cultural affairs and personal envoy, and Princess Miriam Ghazi. King Abdullah will be closely following the implementation plan for the commemoration in 2030.
Greek Orthodox Archbishop and Head of the Council of Church Leaders, Archbishop Christophoros Atallah, praised the King’s support for the initiative. The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, said that the commemoration will also be an opportunity to reaffirm the values of unity, harmony, and mutual understanding. He also thanked the King for his support and his commitment to promoting peace. The Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem and Primate of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East, Hosam Naoum, said the initiative would encourage working together with churches and Christian organisations from around the world.
During BIO University’s inauguration, the King emphasised the symbolic significance of the site where Jesus was baptised. He toured the facilities at BIO University, a non-profit institution established by the Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem,
