A Scandinavian royal trio has pushed pause on a joint trip to Greenland.
King Frederik of Denmark, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden have put their plans on hold due to the political situation in the North American country and territory of Denmark.
A spokesperson for the Swedish Royal Court confirmed to Expressen that there are no plans to visit Greenland at the moment. They added that the trip was “no more than a plan” and that they hope the visit can take place in the future. Visiting now would not be appropriate, especially for King Frederik.
US President Donald Trump has said on numerous occasions that he wants the US to purchase Greenland from Denmark, but Denmark has said Greenland is not for sale. Trump has said acquiring Greenland is essential for US national security and has not ruled out using military force. A USA Today poll showed that over half of Americans do not want to take over Greenland, and Greenland is not a fan of the idea either with 85% telling Danish Berlingske and Greenland’s Sermitsiaq dailies that they wanted to remain part of Denmark.
The royal trio, who are close friends, have previously visited Greenland together when Frederik was still Crown Prince. Their visit heavily focused on climate change.
