Queen Sonja has been diagnosed with heart failure following a visit to Rikshospitalet.
Queen Sonja of Norway visited Oslo’s Rikshospitalet [National Hospital] for cardiac examinations. The Queen was subsequently diagnosed with atrial fibrillation [abnormal heart rhythm] and heart failure.
A press release from the Norwegian Royal Court notes that the Queen needs ‘rest’ and ‘adjustment of her medication’ but is in ‘good spirits’. Her Majesty was not be admitted to the National Hospital, but will remain at home during the period of rest.
As a result of the sick leave, the Queen will not participate in the upcoming county tour to four municipalities in Vestland.
King Harald will carry out the county tour as planned with the Royal Ship.
The Queen has had previous cardiac related issues including being airlifted to hospital while on holiday in Norway. On another occasion, Queen Sonja had a pacemaker inserted as a precaution. This means both King Harald and Queen Sonja are fitted with the live saving devices should an emergency arise.
