Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has designed new costumes for the Christmas ballet The Nutcracker in Tivoli Gardens.
The Nutcracker is returning to the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen with choreography by Peter Bo Bendixen and set design and costumes by Queen Margrethe. Three of the new costumes have been personally designed by the Queen. The ballet reopened on 30 November and will run until 29 December.
Queen Margrethe expressed her delight in contributing to The Nutcracker ballet, saying, “I take great joy in contributing to the ballet production of The Nutcracker. Even now, in our sixth staging, it’s still inspiring for the whole team to work on small adjustments and refinements that elevate the overall experience. One example is the new costumes for the three dancing spinning tops, which have been added to the second act. It’s been an exciting project.”
She has received wide acclaim for her set and costume designs for nine other Tivoli Gardens productions.
Peter Bo Bendixen, Artistic Director of the Tivoli Ballet Theatre, said, “The Nutcracker in Tivoli Concert Hall has become a cherished holiday tradition for many. Clara’s enchanting Christmas Eve dream captivates audiences worldwide, and we’re proud to present our sixth staging in 2024. This year, audiences can expect new surprises, including three costumes by HM Queen Margrethe for the dancing spinning tops in the second act. Combined with Mikki Kunttu’s innovative lighting design, Queen Margrethe’s set and costumes, Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, and the Tivoli Ballet Theatre’s talented dancers, this production promises an unforgettable experience that elevates this classic Christmas ballet.”
