Protestors have hurled mud and shouted at the King and Queen of Spain as they visited the flood-ravaged area of Valencia over the weekend.
King Felipe and Queen Letizia visited Paiporta on 3 November and were met with angry protestors as they toured the damage and met victims.
People threw mud at the royals and shouted at them to “go away” and even went as far as to call them “murders.”
Their Majesties were hit with the mud and were later photographed with mud on their clothes and face. Queen Letizia was also seen crying.
Protestors had earlier hurled insults at Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez and the leader of Valencia, Carlos Mazon. Both were whisked away by security.
In contrast, when security tried to block people from getting to King Felipe, the King asked them to stop so he could talk to his countrymen.
He and Queen Letizia spent an hour attempting to calm the protestors before suspending their trip. Spanish media has claimed that the people are angry that the royals’ visit came too late.
Their Majesties met with emergency personnel and were seen hugging members of the grieving public.
Valencia is the hardest hit region by what has been called one of the worst floods in European history. Towns are buried by mud and at least 217 people have died. Many more are still missing.
Spain has sent tens of thousands of troops to help in the region.
