Prince Hans Adam of Liechtenstein is marking his 80th birthday today.
The Prince was born in Zurich, Switzerland, to Prince Franz Joseph and Princess Gina and counts Pope Pius XII as his godfather.
He was educated throughout Europe, from Austria to the United Kingdom and speaks English, French and German fluently.
Prince Hans Adam became the Regent of Liechtenstein in 1984 and officially ascended the throne in 1989 after the death of his father.
As monarch, the Prince has broad powers and the people of Liechtenstein rejected a proposal to curb his power in 2012. He’s Europe’s wealthiest monarch and is known to have transformed LGT Bank from a local bank to a successful international banking institution.
Prince Hans Adam named his eldest son, Alois, as Regent in 2004.
Hans Adam married Czech Countess Marie Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau in 1967, and together, they had four children: Hereditary Prince Alois, Prince Maximilian, Prince Constantin (1972-2023), and Princess Tatjana. They also have 15 grandchildren. The pair remained married until Princess Marie’s death in 2021 at the age of 81.
