The original Nazi party membership card belonging to Prince Bernhard, consort of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, has been uncovered.

Although few doubted that he hadn’t been a member of the Nazi party, the original card now proves it beyond any doubt. The NSDAP-Card (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei) was found in the Prince’s private archive at Soestdijk Palace and was uncovered by author Flip Maarschalkerweerd. He wrote the book “De Achterblijvers” (those who remained behind), which was published today.

Prince Bernhard always denied being a member of the Nazi party, even though a copy of the card had been uncovered in the United States and correspondence had been found which mentioned the cancellation of his membership. Prince Bernhard only admitted to being a member of a certain branch of the SS for a short while.

He actually told the Volkskrant shortly before his death, “I can swear with my hand on the bible; I was never a nazi. I never paid for the membership; I never had a membership card.”

Prince Bernhard is the grandfather of the current King of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander.
