Albert II, Prince of Monaco, has sent a message of condolence to the President of Portugal following the deadly accident on the Gloria funicular in Lisbon.
He wrote, “Mr. President, Princess Charlene and I were deeply shocked to learn of the tragic accident on the Gloria funicular in Lisbon. My family and the people of Monaco join me in expressing our deep sorrow following this tragedy. We extend our condolences to the bereaved families and our best wishes for a successful recovery to the injured. Our thoughts are with the Portuguese people on this day of national mourning. Please accept, Mr. President, the assurance of our solidarity and my highest regard.”
At least 17 people have been killed after Lisbon’s world-famous Gloria funicular cable railway derailed and crashed into a building. At least 21 other people have been injured. The accident happened last night around 6.15 p.m. local time.
Lisbon mayor Carlos Moedas has announced three days of mourning for those killed in the accident.
