King Carl Gustaf of Sweden has opened the Riksdag (Swedish parliament) for the 2025-2026 year in Stockholm.
The King was joined by Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine, and Chris O’Neill. Princess Sofia did not attend as she is still on maternity leave after giving birth to her fourth child, Princess Ines, in February.
As is tradition, Their Majesties and the Crown Princess Couple arrived at the Riksdag in a horse-drawn carriage, while the rest of the family arrived by car.
His Majesty addressed the members of the Riksdag to open the new parliament.
King Carl Gustaf remarked about the importance of Sweden’s voice in the world, “Sweden’s voice is needed now more than ever. Through Nordic and European cooperation, and with the strength of our NATO membership, we can be a global force for security and democracy. Together, we have the knowledge, resources and innovative power to shape a more sustainable and inclusive future.”
“My hope is that this parliamentary year will be permeated with respect, sensitivity and a long-term perspective,” he also said.
The King concluded by wishing the government luck as the new year begins, “Every day is a new opportunity to contribute to a better future together. With these words, I wish you strength, courage and wisdom for the upcoming parliamentary year.”
Ahead of the official opening of the Riksdag, the Royal Family attended a church service alongside members of the government.
In the evening, the royals joined the government at a performance at the Stockholm Concert Hall.
