King Harald of Norway has addressed his people and remarked on the controversy his family has faced this year.

The King of Norway gave his annual speech, alluding to the legal troubles of his step-grandson, Marius Borg Høiby.

He began his speech by saying: “For many, 2024 has probably been a year of stability. For some, a year when life took a positive turn. For others, the year when everything fell apart.

“For us in the family, this has been a year when we have truly been put to the test. A year when we have become even more aware of what matters in life.”

King Harald also stressed the importance of supporting each other and giving each other hope.

“Life can hurt. We humans make mistakes. Things don’t turn out the way we dreamed or imagined. But we try to learn from our mistakes. We get back on our feet – and keep going. This drive is something very special to us humans. And I think it’s about hope,” he said.

His Majesty took time to thank those who help those in need and praise Norway for being a diverse country where all are welcome.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway’s son, Marius Borg Hoiby, was arrested on suspicion of rape. He had previously been arrested for domestic assault. We broke down what we know about the case against him here.
