The Grand Ducal Family of Luxembourg took part in National Day celebrations where the Grand Duke announced that he was appointed Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume as Regent.
Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa were joined by Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie, Prince Felix, Prince Louis, Princess Alexandra and Nicolas Bagory, and Prince Sebastien for the celebrations.
They attended the official ceremony at the Philharmonie, a Te Deum and a military parade, as is tradition.
It was during the Grand Duke’s National Day speech at the Philharmonie that he revealed his intent to hand over constitutional responsibilities to his son in October.
He said: “In this context, I, together with the Grand Duchess, Prince Guillaume and Princess Stéphanie, want to inform you that I have decided to transfer the Lieutenancy to Prince Guillaume this October.”
He concluded by saying: “With all my love and trust, I wish him a happy hand with all my heart.”
The Grand Duke then embraced his son to a standing ovation from the audience.
Regency is one of the steps of the abdication process in Luxembourg. The Grand Ducal Court said: “The appointment of the Lieutenant Representative traditionally occurs in the process of change of reign. The procedure is governed by the provisions of the Constitution.”
Grand Duke Henri served as Regent for his father, Grand Duke Jean, for around two years before Jean’s official abdication. Grand Duke Henri ascended the Grand Ducal Throne on 7 October 2000.
