Crown Prince Christian of Denmark stepped in for his grandmother, Queen Margrethe, at a bridge opening this weekend.

He represented the Queen at the opening of Queen Margrethe II’s Bridge. Queen Margrethe is currently recovering from two procedures.

The Crown Prince was the last person to drive across the old bridge, Storstrøm, before officially opening the bridge named after his grandmother. His car followed a 94-year-old Chevrolet, which was previously used by his great-great-grandfather, King Christian X, when he opened Storstrøm Bridge in 1937.

Trains will continue to travel across Storstrøm until the tracks open on Queen Margrethe’s Bridge.

He also drove across the new bridge and stopped halfway to view his grandmother’s monogram on the bridge’s only pylon.

The Crown Prince also took part in the celebrations at the nearby square, where he met the Minister of Urban Affairs, Land and Transport, Signe Munk, and the Director of Roads at the Danish Road Directorate, Jens Holmboe.

The bridge is approximately four kilometres long and 102 metres tall; it is Denmark’s third-largest bridge. It was originally opened on 26 September 1937 by Queen Margrethe’s grandfather, Christian X, under the name Storstrøm Bridge.

Queen Margrethe was recently discharged from the National Hospital in Copenhagen following a heart procedure and a subsequent procedure to remove a blood clot in her hip.

The Queen is resting at Fredensborg Palace, and her engagements will be evaluated on an ongoing basis. Her Majesty’s health is the priority.
