Following tradition, King Frederik appeared on the balcony of Amaleinborg Palace to greet the crowds who came out to wish him well on his birthday. He was joined on the balcony by his wife, Queen Mary, and their four children: Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. His mother, Queen Margrethe, also appeared to celebrate her son’s 56th birthday.

King Frederik became King of Denmark upon his mother’s surprising abdication in January of this year.
