King Frederik of Denmark released a statement on the first anniversary of ascending the throne upon the abdication of his mother, Queen Margrethe.

Taking to social media, the King wrote: “Seriousness.

“Concentration.

“A smile on my face.

“It was all at stake when, at this time a year ago, I was getting ready for the proclamation. Taking over from my mother without having to say goodbye was and is a privilege of the very greatest.

“January 14, 2024, was an emotional and unforgettable day from start to finish.”

Several behind-the-scenes images were then shared on Instagram, taken by Dennis Stenild before the King appeared before the crowd on the balcony of Amalienborg Palace before he departed for Christiansborg Palace.

A behind-the-scenes video was also released, featuring a sweet moment when Crown Prince Christian and Princess Isabella tell their father, in English, “love you” before he steps onto the balcony.

Queen Margrethe announced she was abdicating the throne in favour of her son, Frederik, during her 2023 New Year’s Eve address. Frederik succeeded her on 14 January 2024.
