Which royals can vote in the US Presidential Election?

Americans head to the polls today to elect their next president. Several members of royal families can cast their vote for the 47th President of the United States.

The most obvious royal who can and will vote is the Duchess of Sussex. A California native, Meghan is a known Democrat and has made her dislike of President Donald Trump well-known. It’s widely assumed she will be voting for Vice President Kamala Harris. After she and the Duke of Sussex stepped back as working royals in 2020, they have resided in her home state of California.

There are other members of royal families across the globe who are eligible to vote in the election. Whether or not they have sent in an absentee ballot or are voting in person is not known. We take a look at a selection of those who could cast a vote below:

Chris O’Neill, the husband of Princess Madeleine of Sweden, is a dual American-British citizen and can vote in the election. He relocated to Sweden with his family this past summer. O’Neill previously caused controversy with an Instagram post a few years ago in which he shared his disdain for Trump.

A newer American on the royal scene, Durek Verrett, can also vote. Another California native, Verrett is married to Princess Martha Louise of Norway. They married in Norway earlier this year. The Shaman hasn’t endorsed either candidate this election, and it’s unknown if he has or is going to vote.

Several Greek royals are American citizens and could vote in the election. They are all the children of Crown Prince Pavlos and Crown Princess Marie-Chantal and were born in the States: Princess Maria Olympia, Prince Constantine Alexios and Prince Achileas Andreas. Prince Aristides Stavros was also born in the US, but at age 16, he is not old enough to vote in America.

A lesser-known royal, Princess Ariana of Ethiopia, is still thought to hold her US citizenship, and as a result, she could vote in the US Presidential Election. She is the wife of Prince Joel of Ethiopia – the great-grandson of Ethiopia’s last monarch, Haile Selassie I.

Another royal who could cast a ballot is The Hereditary Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (born Kelly Rondestvedt in Florida). She lives in Germany with her family, and it is not thought she has renounced her American citizenship. As such, she is able to vote in the election, if she so chooses.

Of course, this is not an all-inclusive list. There are other members of royal families who could be eligible to vote in the United States but who we did not list here. Royals like Queen Noor of Jordan, Crown Princess Marie Chantal of Greece, and Prince Albert of Monaco (who were born as American citizens) cannot vote as they either lost or renounced their US citizenship.
