As the United States gets ready to inaugurate its 47th president, we are looking at the American presidents King Charles has met.
The King has met 10 US Presidents:
Dwight D. Eisenhower
The first US President Charles met was Dwight D. Eisenhower. At the time, Prince Charles was only ten, and “Ike” and his family visited the Royal Family at Balmoral Castle in August 1959. The New York Times called the visit informal.
Richard Nixon
President Richard Nixon was the next American head of state that King Charles met. In 1969, the King helped to welcome President Nixon to Buckingham Palace.
He and Princess Anne also visited the White House in 1970, and Charles later said he felt that Nixon was trying to set him up with his daughter, Tricia.
He later said of the visit: “That was the time when they were trying to marry me off to Tricia Nixon.”

Jimmy Carter
Then Prince Charles met President Jimmy Carter in London at the 1977 G7 Summitt where leaders from Canada, France, Italy, West Germany, Japan, the UK, and the US gathered. Charles is pictured below, second from left, at the event.

Ronald Reagan
Queen Elizabeth II and Ronald Reagan were known to be close friends, so it is no shock that King Charles met the 40th US President. The then Prince of Wales met Reagan at the White House in 1981 and again at Windsor Castle the following year during Reagan’s official visit to the UK. That was not the last time Charles met Ronald Reagan. He and the Princess of Wales were welcomed to the White House in 1985 for a state visit.

King Charles was also known to have a close friendship with Nancy Reagan, and they communicated via letters until she died in 2016. He also attended President Reagan’s funeral in 2004.

George H.W. Bush
George H.W. Bush served as Vice President under Ronald Reagan, meaning Charles met Bush during that time as well. They shared a dinner during their state visit to the United States at the British Ambassador’s Residence. Of course, they also met during Bush’s time in the White House at Camp David. The pair remained close and attended several events together after Bush’s time in office. King Charles was also at Bush’s funeral in 2018 on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II.
Bill Clinton
While Prince of Wales, Charles met Bill Clinton at Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s funeral in 1995.
George W. Bush
President Bush undertook a state visit to the UK in 2003, and during that visit, he met the future King Charles. Two years later, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall undertook a state visit to the United States and met Bush at the White House.

Barack Obama
Barack Obama was in office from January 2009 to January 2017, and he first met King Charles in 2009 in London at the reception for G20 leaders at Buckingham Palace. They met again at the White House in 2011 before Obama travelled to the UK for a state visit. The pair met again in 2014 and 2015.

Donald Trump
King Charles met the 45th and soon-to-be 47th President of the United States many years before Trump became the leader of the free world at social events. They also met after Trump became President of the United States in 2019 while Trump was in the UK on a state visit. It is highly probable the pair will meet again once Trump is back in the White House.

Joe Biden
Charles first met Biden while Biden was Vice President under Barack Obama. They met again once Biden became the 46th President of the United States. They met at the 2021 COP26 World Leaders Summit, at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022 and several other events throughout Biden’s tenure in the White House.
