Amidst the state visit to the UK, President Donald Trump made a private visit to the grave of Queen Elizabeth II alongside First Lady Melania Trump.
After the official welcome by the Prince and Princess of Wales, the President and First Lady were greeted by King Charles and Queen Camilla. Once the traditional welcome ceremony and gift exchange had taken place, the President made a private visit to the grave of the late Queen Elizabeth II at St George’s Chapel.
President Trump and First Lady Melania laid a wreath at Her Late Majesty’s tomb and received a tour of the chapel, which the American leader called “a great honor.”
Trump was known to be very fond of the late monarch and paid tribute to her after her 2022 death.
He said: “Melania and I will always cherish our time together with the Queen, and never forget Her Majesty’s generous friendship, great wisdom, and wonderful sense of humor. What a grand and beautiful lady she was—there was nobody like her!”
Trump is on an unprecedented second state visit to the UK by a US President. He first undertook a state visit to the UK during his first term in office in 2019 while Queen Elizabeth II was on the throne.
This year’s two-day trip has had the largest military welcome for a visiting head of state in living memory. Around 1,300 service members took part in the welcome on the first day of the journey in the UK.
