The Prince of Wales has been installed as Great Master of the Order of the Bath.

The heir to the throne was installed on 16 May in the Order of the Bath Service at Westminster Abbey, marking the order’s 300th anniversary.

The Friday ceremony included taking the oath and the installation of the five knights.

The service was also special for King Charles, as it was the first time he presided over the ceremony as sovereign. The King is Sovereign Head of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath.

The Service for the Order of the Bath occurs every four years, with the monarch traditionally attending every eight years. The King became monarch in 2022 (when he coincidentally made his last appearance at the event as heir), making this service the first he could attend as sovereign.

The Prince of Wales attends every service.

The Order of the Bath was created in 1725 with Letters Patent by King George I. Those given the honour are military officers and senior civil servants.
