The Prince and Princess of Wales welcomed the Nigerian President and First Lady.

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accompanied by Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, has been invited by King Charles to the first Nigerian state visit in over 32 years. The Presidential Couple will be hosted later for a gala state banquet, but before any of the ceremonies can take place, a certain tradition is upheld.

The heir to the throne, who has been Prince William since 2022, has the unique privilege of being the first Member of the Royal Family to greet incoming parties and retrieve the state guest from their respective landing airport or accommodation. The Prince of Wales and the Princess of Wales have undertaken this significant diplomatic gesture on numerous occasions.

Previously, the Prince and Princess welcomed guests from France, Germany, and the United States, travelling together to greet the King and Queen formally. While the Princess of Wales was recuperating following abdominal surgery and subsequent cancer treatment in 2024, Prince William was the one to greet the Emperor and Empress of Japan on their historic state visit.

On Wednesday morning, the Prince of Wales with a radiant Princess of Wales—dressed a specially chosen grey ensemble from British-Nigerian designer Tolu Coker—were on hand to greet President and Mrs Tinubu at the Fairmont Hotel, beginning the state visit.

The King and Queen will host a ceremonial welcome followed by the traditional carriage procession back to Windsor Castle for a viewing of the Royal Collection. They will visit Vicars’ Hall together later.
