A portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales has sold in an auction for millions of dollars.

A painting of the late royal by Andy Warhol was auctioned in London on 7 March and sold for 2.4 million GBP (around 3 million USD).

It was expected for the portrait to sell for around 1.2 and 1.8 million GBP.

Warhol created the portrait in 1982, around a year after the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana.

Portrait of Princess Diana shows the late Princess against a blue backdrop while wearing a blue dress and showing off her sapphire engagement ring.

Phillip’s Auction House London said that the artwork was “a strikingly tender portrait of the young princess, where the prominent display of her engagement ring is not only a poignant symbol of her marriage to Charles but also of her deep love and devotion for her people.”
