The British Royal Family all speak English, as one would expect, but some can speak multiple languages. We take a look at the languages spoken by the British Royal Family.

King Charles can speak French, German and Welsh to varying degrees. Queen Camilla has shown she is conversational in French during engagements.

The Prince of Wales speaks Welsh and is conversational in French.

The Princess of Wales has admitted she is attempting to learn Welsh and has some basic understanding of French. She studied in Florence, Italy, during a gap year, but has said her Italian is “so bad.”

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have a Spanish nanny, and they have learned the language as they’ve grown up.

The Duke of Sussex was taught French but has forgotten most of it, by his own admission.

The Duchess of Sussex is known to be fluent in Spanish and interned at the American embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has shown a basic knowledge of French on some royal engagements.

The Princess Royal and Prince Edward, like their mother, speak French.

Aside from English and French, Prince Michael of Kent is fluent in Russian and is a qualified Russian interpreter. The Prince has working knowledge of German and Italian. His wife, Princess Michael of Kent (born Marie-Christine von Reibnitz in German-occupied Czechoslovakia), is a native German speaker who also speaks English, French and reportedly Russian.

The Duke of Kent is also fluent in French, as his mother and aunt preferred to speak in that language at home.

The Duchess of Gloucester’s native tongue is Danish, but she also speaks English fluently.
