King Charles has delivered the first throne speech in Canada by a monarch in almost 70 years.
The speech set out the government’s priorities on behalf of Prime Minister Mark Carney.
King Charles praised Canada and said he loved it “so much.” He added, “The True North is indeed strong and free”, referring to Canada’s national anthem and US President Donald Trump’s latest threats to make Canada the 51st state of the United States. The speech is normally given by the governor general.
The complete visit to Canada lasted just two days in total. It began on Monday with a welcome ceremony at the airport, a street hockey puck drop and a ceremonial tree planting. Afterwards, King Charles held private audiences with Governor General Simon and Prime Minister Carney. Tuesday was the day of the throne speech.
Following the state opening of parliament, King Charles and Queen Camilla paid their respects at the National War Memorial of Ottawa.
