King Charles III has appointed the first Master of the King’s Music of the new reign.

Ms Errollyn Wallen CBE has been appointed. She succeeds Dame Judith Weir DBE, who was appointed to the role by Queen Elizabeth II in July 2014.

This is an honorary appointment made by the Sovereign and is conferred on a musician of distinction who has added to the musical life in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. It was created during the reign of King Charles I, and back then, the Master served as the head of the Sovereign’s band of musicians. This ended in 1899 when the Queen’s Band was created.

They currently have no official duties but will often compose pieces for royal occasions.

Errollyn Wallen CBE said, “I am thrilled to accept this royal appointment. It will be a
privilege and a great honour to serve His Majesty The King, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. I look forward to championing music and music-making for all.”
