The Duke of Sussex has been given the Pat Tillman Award for Service during the 2024 ESPYs.
Despite criticism from Mary Tillman, the mother of Pat Tillman, the Duke of Sussex thanked her and the Pat Tillman Foundation during his acceptance speech.
He said, “Her advocacy for Pat’s legacy is deeply personal and one that I respect. The bond between a mother and son is eternal and transcends even the greatest losses.”
Pat Tillman gave up his football career to enlist in the army after the 9/11 attacks. He was later killed in Afghanistan by friendly fire.
Prince Harry received the award for his work with the Invictus Games. He paid tribute to the veterans and said, “I stand here not as Prince Harry, Pat Tillman Award recipient, but rather a voice on behalf of the Invictus Games Foundation and the thousands of veterans and service personnel from over 20 nations who have made the Invictus Games a reality. This award belongs to them, not to me.”
The Duchess of Sussex was with him as he accepted the award.
