The Duke of Kent celebrated his 91st birthday with a meaningful visit to Wigmore Hall.
The ever-stalwart Duke of Kent celebrated his 91st birthday on Friday. Wigmore Hall is no stranger to the Kent family, who have attended concerts and recitals there for years.
On Friday evening, Wigmore Hall arranged a concert in honour of the Duke’s birthday, which he attended with family members and Lady Susan Hussey—Queen Elizabeth II’s former lady-in-waiting and close family friend.
Wigmore Hall regards itself as “one of the world’s great concert halls, specialises in chamber and instrumental music, early music and song.”
With a musical history stretching back to 1901, Wigmore Hall is livelier than ever, offering outstanding concerts and a wide range of community events. With its vibrant sense of adventure, the Hall consistently captures the public imagination and regularly presents artistic projects which are unique to the UK’s musical life.
The Duke of Kent has served as Royal Patron of London’s iconic music venue since 2015 and has attended many events over recent years. In May, the Duke visited to celebrate the Hall’s 125th anniversary, which included a concert where he presented John Gilhooly CBE, Director of Wigmore Hall, with an Honorary Membership of the Royal Philharmonic Society. Wigmore Hall has described the Duke as “a loyal champion of classical music throughout his life.”
One year ago, the Hall arranged another concert in honour of the Duke of Kent on his 90th birthday in October 2025—his first outing since the death of his wife, Katharine, the late Duchess of Kent. The Duke attended alongside his brother, Prince Michael of Kent, where he was presented with his own Wigmore Hall Medal “in recognition of the Duke’s huge contribution to the musical life of the nation, and particularly his work as a Royal patron – he has been a steadfast member at the Hall over many years, and this royal presentation marked his 90th birthday celebration.”
The Duke of Kent is now the oldest member of the British Royal Family and has been carrying out engagements since 1952. He is the son of the late Prince George and Princess Marina (née Princess of Greece and Denmark) and was the late Queen Elizabeth II’s first cousin. He is the elder brother of Princess Alexandra, the Honourable Lady Ogilvy and Prince Michael of Kent.
