Buckingham Palace has revealed details for King Charles and Queen Camilla’s upcoming visit to Canada.
Their Majesties will visit the capital of Ottawa from Monday, May 26, to Tuesday, May 27.
The King and Queen are expected to attend a community event on the first day that highlights the rich cultural heritage and diversity of Canada.
King Charles will also hold an audience with the Governor General, Mary Simon, and Prime Minister Mark Carney before attending the swearing-in of Queen Camilla in the Canadian Privy Council.
Their Majesties’ visit will be marked with a tree planting at Rideau Hall, near the location of the sugar maple tree they planted during their 2017 visit to the country.
Their first day will conclude with a short reception for Lieutenant Governors and Territorial Commissioners from the provinces and territories of Canada.
Day two of the visit will include the State Opening of Parliament, in which the King and Queen will attend. The King will also deliver the Speech from the Throne to the Senate Chamber.
This is only the second time that a Canadian monarch has opened Parliament in history; the first was when Queen Elizabeth II opened the legislature in October 1957. It is also only the third time a sovereign has given the Speech from the Throne, which Buckingham Palace calls “a significant moment between the Head of State and the Canadian people.”
Lastly, they will lay a wreath and flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial.
This will be King Charles’s first trip to Canada as a monarch.
