Princess Sonam Yangden turns one

Princess Sonam Yangden of Bhutan turns one today.

The Princess is the only daughter of King Jigme Khesar and Queen Jetsun Pema. She has two older brothers, Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel and Prince Ugyen Wangchuck.

Princess Sonam Yangden Wangchuck was born on 9 September 2023 at Lingkana Palace in the capital of Bhutan, Thimphu.

Following Bhutanese tradition, her name was not announced for a few months. Her name was revealed on 9 December 2023. The young royal shares her first name with her paternal aunt, Princess Sonam Dechen, and maternal grandmother, Sonam Choki.

Sonam means merit, longevity and good fortune, while Yangden means precious jewel and signifies prosperity and well-being.

She is third in line to the throne after her two older brothers.

At only a year old, she has accompanied her parents on a state visit to Bangladesh and attended many royal events.
