The Bhutanese royals visited Sarpang Dzong on 25 July during their visit to Gelephu.
King Jigme Khesar and Queen Jetsun Pema were joined by their three children, Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel, Prince Ugyen Wangchuck, and Princess Sonam Yangden.

Their Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses first travelled to Sarpang Dzong, where they offered prayers. They were also presented with sacred items from Laytshog Lopen. Lopen, according to the Royal House, “is overseeing the preparations of zung to be placed inside the 108 Chortens to be built in the Gelephu Mindfulness City.”
The 108 Chortens is a project in Bhutan that will see 108 stupas (a sacred place for meditation in Buddhism) built in the Gelephu Mindfulness City in one day. The building will take place on 1 November 2026 with 40,000 volunteers.
The Royal House explained, “The ambitious and special project demonstrates the strength in unity and capabilities of the Bhutanese people, and is dedicated to bestowing blessings upon the Gelephu Mindfulness City.”
After visiting Sarpang Dzong, the King, Queen, Princes and Princess met many people who are working on projects in the city, and the young royals helped monks create small crafts. Time was also spent with the people of Gelephu and learning about local businesses.
