Princess Aiko of Japan attended her first major event involving foreign guests for the first time.
Her parents, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, met with the Kenyan President William Samoyei and his wife at the Imperial Palace, followed by a lunch.
The Imperial Household Agency reported that the Emperor expressed his “extreme pleasure” at the development of the relationship between Japan and Kenya as they celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations last year. The Emperor impressed his guests by doing part of the press conference and toast in Swahili. Princess Aiko also spoke some words in Swahili.
The Crown Prince was also present at the luncheon. His wife was absent due to continuing gastrointestinal problems. Their son, Prince Hisahito, has fallen ill with influenza.
