Emperor Naruhito of Japan has become the first Emperor to visit Mongolia.

The Emperor is currently on an eight-day trip to the East Asian country alongside Empress Masako.

He was officially welcomed at Chinggis Khaan International Airport on 6 July.

His Imperial Majesty’s first official engagement was to the Chinggis Khaan National Museum to learn more about the founder of the Mongol Empire.

He viewed a statue of Khaan and saw other artefacts to learn more about Mongolia’s history and culture. The museum opened in 2022 to showcase Mongolian history from ancient times to the 20th century.

Prior to the trip, Emperor Naruhito said he wanted to understand the Asian conqueror, Chinggis Khaan, better.

Their Imperial Majesties will also meet the President and First Lady and attend events related to Mongolia and Japan during their visit.

The Emperor and Empress will be in Mongolia from 6 July to 13 July.

Naruhito previously visited Mongolia when he was still the Crown Prince of Japan in 2007.

Japan and Mongolia began relations in the 13th century; however, the Mongolian Empire attempted to conquer Japan, and the countries did not have official diplomatic relations until the late 20th century.
